| Philippines, December 14, 2009, by Richel Umel Members of the International Federation of Journalists and National Union of Journalists of the Philippines offer flowers, candles and prayers to the graves of 12 slain journalists in one of the private cemeteries in General Santos City Monday. The 12 reporters are part of the 30 journalists killed in Ampatuan, Maguindanao massacre which claimed the lives of more than 57 civilians on November 23. Journalists covering the Ampatuan massacre and the Martial Law in Maguindanao, took time off to go to the site where 31 journalists died in Barangay Salman in Ampatuan town. They lighted candles and laid 30 white roses on one of the pits where our colleagues were mercilessly killed and buried.

| December 8,2009 - Open letter to friends and fellows who are not journalists: by Antonia Koop, International Coordinator, PECOJON 30 Journalists died in an ambush on November 23,2009 in Maguindanao, Central Mindanao, Philippines, along with 27 other people who joined the family of a local politician for the filing of candidacy for the upcoming 2010 elections. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) qualified the incident as the worst attack on journalists recorded so far in journalism history. The event has come to be known as the Ampatuan or Maguindanao Massacre. The brutal and brazen attack once more raises the most crucial questions we as journalists have to face: Is there any story worth dying for? And for what do we journalists risk our lives? | |
